About the University

The University of Auckland – in Māori Waipapa Taumata Rau – was formally opened on 23 May 1883 as Auckland University College, part of the University of New Zealand. Today, the University of Auckland is the largest university in New Zealand, hosting over 43,000 students across multiple campus locations in Auckland and Whangārei.

Teaching and learning is conducted within eight faculties; Auckland Law School, Faculty of Arts, Business School, Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries, Faculty of Education and Social Work, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and Faculty of Science.

The university has two large-scale research institutes, the Liggins Institute and Auckland Bioengineering Institute, as well as and other institutes and centres, which carry out world-leading research across numerous study areas.

The City Campus in the Auckland central business district hosts the majority of students and faculties. Shaped as an albatross, the Sir Owen G Glenn Building, home to University of Auckland Business School, is a breathtaking place of convergence for business, academia and government. Housing fully-equipped and disability-friendly lecture theatres, computer labs, work rooms, social spaces and a café, the Business School is a collaborative, knowledge-rich environment within the capabilities needed to succeed in sophisticated global markets are forged.

Other world-class facilities for students include the University of Auckland Library – offering vast scholarly and cultural collections and online resources – and multiple information commons spread across the university’s campuses. Outside of academia, there are exceptional facilities for sport and recreation, student health and counselling as well as career development and employment.

As the No.1 University in New Zealand, the University of Auckland has a reputation that precedes itself. Ranked comfortably in the Top 100 universities in the world at #65 by the QS World University Rankings 2025 and #152 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025, the University also claimed 13th place in the Times Higher Education World Impact Rankings 2024.

How to Apply

Upon completing the NCC Education Level 3 International Foundation Diploma for Higher Education Studies, students are welcome to apply to undergraduate degrees at the University of Auckland*.
