WHAT IS IELTS?
IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, is an English proficiency test. Many people take this test to pursue higher education, career opportunities, or immigration to English-speaking countries.
First introduced in 1989, this test is designed specifically for non-native speakers who want to assess their level of English proficiency.
Approximately 10,000 tests are taken daily, and the results are recognized by over 12,000 organizations, including educational institutions, companies, professional associations, and government agencies.
Additionally, the test is available in two types of question sets: Academic and General English. If you plan to study abroad, you should take the IELTS Academic test.
WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE IELTS TEST?
The test consists of four language skills with a total duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes in one day. Here’s a detailed breakdown of each test section:
- Listening: Duration of 28-32 minutes with 40 questions.

WHAT IS THE IELTS TEST FORMAT?
This test has various formats that you can choose depending on your needs, whether you take the test in person at a test center or online.
For visa or immigration purposes, you must take the test at a test center, where your identity will be checked and verified in person. However, some institutions or companies also accept online test results.
Here are the three test formats you need to know:
1. PAPER-BASED TEST
The Paper-Based Test involves a test using printed questions and answers on paper at the test center. This includes the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections.
The Speaking section will be conducted face-to-face with the examiner. You will receive the test certificate within 14 days after the test.
2. COMPUTER-BASED TEST
The Computer-Based Test also takes place at the test center. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections will be displayed on a computer screen, and you will input your answers via the computer.
The Speaking section will be held face-to-face with the examiner or conducted via Zoom. The certificate will be available within 3-5 days after the test.
3. ONLINE TEST
IELTS also offers an Online Test that allows you to take the test from home, provided you have a stable internet connection. The test format is similar to the in-person test, including the same questions and duration.
The difference is that the Speaking section will be conducted via video call with the examiner, and the certificate will be available 7-8 days after the test. However, note that the results of the online test cannot be used for study applications abroad.
