1) CPT and OPT Are Key:
Learn the difference between Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).
CPT: Internships, co-ops, or other training completed during a study program.
OPT: Training or paid work that relates to a student’s studies; “pre-completion OPT” happens during studies, and “post-completion OPT” happens after.
2) STEM in High-Demand:
Traditionally, an F-1 visa only allows up to 12 months of OPT. However, eligible STEM students can apply to stay for up to 36 months.
See the full list of STEM-designated programs.
3) To Work On-Campus:
Active F-1 students may apply for on-campus work up to 30 days before classes start.
The student must get authorization from their institution’s Designated School Official (DSO).
4) To Work Off-Campus:
Off-campus employment must also be authorized by an institution’s DSO. It’s only available to F-1 students who:
Have completed at least one full academic year of their program,
Are seeking jobs which are related to their area of study, and
Are eligible for either CPT or OPT.
5) Hour Limits:
F-1 students can usually work up to 20 hours per week when classes are in session, and full-time when classes are not.
